Video transcript (more or less consistent with the video)
Hey Fair West Neighbors, this video inspired by Pete Dinelli’s article (posted to one of our recent FB posts) in which he focused on three initiatives he identified to take back our neighborhoods. The three initiatives were related to:
- the city closing certain problematic alleyways,
- alley beautification projects
- an initiative/desire for increased enforcement of existing laws that would, effectively, criminalize homelessness.
Pete’s article identifies a lack of feeling safe necessitation these initiatives.
I’ve become increasingly involved in neighborhood and community efforts over the last few years and I would offer that the initiative I’ve found most valuable towards increasing my feeling of safety has been to meet more people in the neighborhood. Basically: I walk more, talk more and avert my eyes less. The more inclusive I go the riskier it feels so I say go slow and make friends. Consider participating in FWNA events for, hopefully, a convenient way to meet other locals.
Speaking of friends, the South San Pedro neighborhood have another alley beautification effort that I’ve enjoyed. Go south on Alvarado to Trumbull. Go left and then turn right onto the alley between Valencia and Cardenas to see an alley with wood mulch instead of compacted dirt and weeds, garden beds and budding murals. I’ve been to a few events there and hope to see their efforts continue and their success replicate.
Thanks and see you around the neighborhood.
